Now for the Doulton "Oriel"

Having catalogued the Asiatic Pheasant, the team was ready for the Doulton Burslem "Oriel". This seems to be crockery from a number of sources too, not a dinner set as such. It is spread between "Loren" and the Cobb and Co Inn.

Here are some of the pieces:

The Gravy Boat - our favourite piece.

There are four different sizes of oval platter.

And this beautiful tureen.

This form of dinnerware was made by Doulton at Burslem in Staffordshire some time between 1891 and 1902.

In all, we have ten dinner plates, two smaller plates, six bread-and-butter plates, the tureen, the four platters, the gravy boat and a rectangular plate. That makes 25 pieces in all.

Checking on the internet, we can only find this pattern in blue and white, so our green is probably the rarer version.

Asiatic Pheasant update

P07321VGRC

Just an update on the Asiatic Pheasant dinnerware.

This piece, a large bowl, has just been catalogued. All other pieces were in place before 1996, but this one arrived after that date.

There are four dinner plates, four bowls, the bowl above, four different platters and a vegetable tureen. The platter is HERE (scroll down)

We have found we have fourteen pieces (well, fifteen, if you count the lid on the tureen by itself), from at least eight different makers.

A maker's stamp looks like this:

P03773iaVGRC

Many of the stamps are exactly the same, only the initials change for the maker.

This was one of the most popular Victorian dinner set patterns, and we are fortunate to have such a large collection from different makers.
