More on Swan Hill, Millewa and Loxton

It has been interesting comparing the three Heritage Parks so far visited, to see how they differ from us, and how they are much the same.

Swan Hill, for example, is run directly by the Council, on land rented from the Commonwealth Government. All staff are appointed by Council. At Merringur / The Millewa, they decided they wanted to move a house there, so they got together and bought three (?) blocks of land that were being auctioned int eh town for unpaid rates. After that, they rented adjoining land from the State Government. They are an incorporated Society, and have an annual meeting that elects the committee. At Loxton, unfortunately, I was unable to meet with the contact I had arranged, so the position is a little unclear. However I am told that there is a council subsidy, and two committees - a management committee and a Society Committee.

At Loxton, one of the exhibits that especially took my eye was a furnished Nissan Hut, above - the types used by new settlers on fruit blocks after World War II - making them one of the few examples of truly 20th Century housing in Pioneer Parks, but therefore very obviously after 1944. I was unable to work out if Loxton had a time line at which it stopped, but I did find out that when an exhibit is received, it is entered into one book and then not actually entered into the Register until the Committee has approved its acquisition.

At Merringur / The Millewa, basically whatever comes along is generally accepted, although they know they need to address issues of receiving duplicates and items that are too recent.

At Swan Hill it is simple - nothing is accepted after 1930, and this is administered fairly firmly by the Senior Curator, who makes the decisions. And it shows - the atmosphere that comes from having a definite cut-off is one of the really good aspects of the displays.

Speaking of displays - more photographs soon - still editing. Most will be posted in my set for Heritage Villages, with the most recent coming up first, so you do not need to look through them all to find the new ones.

And now I am off to choose some of my favourite pieces from Merringur / The Millewa, and edit the Swan Hill pics. Back tomorrow, with luck.
