Significance II

We are currently undergoing a Significance Assessment at Old Gippstown, with the Collection (both buildings and objects) being examined through a grant from Heritage Victoria.

It is already helping us to look at objects in a different way, and we are learning heaps.

This dress, which we had not taken a lot of notice of before, has been recognised as a child's dress from the 1860s to 1870s. We have immediately taken it off permanent display in order to better conserve it. In future it will only be display on special occasions (or by appointment). When it is on display, we will be able to much better interpret the item.

Setting Up a Small Temporary Exhibition

We are just about to pull down a small, temporary exhibition that has been up in OG's - the cafe at the entrance to Old Gippstown.

The current exhibition is "Celebrating the Centenary of Scouting" - but that was last year, and we need to have the material out for cataloguing as it is part of the Andrew Collection.

At this stage we are looking at bringing out some of our best Doilies for a short time - these are the ones that are too good to leave out in the light (and dust) all the time in the buildings. Maybe with some work baskets.

This Doiley Press has just surfaced in a private collection, and will be available - along with some others from our own collection.

These are two of ours:

P07125VGRC

and

P06074VGRC

The first one is beautifully embroidered, the second is hand painted paper - and needs rephotographing, as part of the flower is turned over.

They can also be found in wood with poker-work decoration, and just as plain fabric wrapped around cardboard. Usually they are round.

We are unsure of the dates for all these, but suspect they are all pre 1950.
